Back Pain Statistics are Alarming
Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 12:10PM Back pain is the leading cause of disability in Americans under the age of 45. 27% of respondents of a National Institute of Health Statistics survey indicated that low back pain was their most common type of pain.
Every year, 3-4% of the population is temporarily disabled, and 1% of the working-age population is disabled totally and permanently because of low back pain (LBP). LBP is second only to the common cold as a cause of lost work time; it is the fifth most frequent cause for hospitalization and the third most common reason to undergo a surgical procedure. Adults reporting LBP were four times as likely to experience serious psychological distress as people without LBP. More than 26 million Americans between the ages of 20-64 experiences frequent back pain.1
The statistics are formidable. It is no wonder that people who are experiencing back pain are looking for a holistic solution that is obtainable and sustainable. Yoga has been researched and proven to be such a solution. I personally have worked with two individuals with back pain who have, in their own words, confirmed it was worked for them. I have listed the link to their personal stories below.
