Researchers have found that T cells, immune cells which belong to a group of white blood cells known as T lymphocytes, and are involved in activating and directing other immune cells, rely on vitamin D in order to be activated.

For T cells to detect and kill foreign pathogens, the cells must first be activated into action and be transformed from inactive and harmless immune cells into killer cells whose function is to seek and destroy foreign invaders. Vitamin D is crucial to this activation and transformation process.
In a separate study, insufficient blood levels of vitamin D in young women were found to be associated with the accumulation of fat in muscle tissue, leading to lower muscle strength, compared to those with normal to high levels of serum vitamin D.
