A little "YOU" goes a long way
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 2:20PM As we change seasons its time to relax and take a breath, sure…how absolutely freeing to think that is “all” you have to do, and yet it “is” the most challenging thing to do.
We can't stop worrying. We can't help thinking about the project at work, the grocery-shopping list, and the million and a half things we should be doing.
We feel guilty for carving out space to take care of ourselves, feel guilty for leaving work or having our spouse watch the kids while we take a yoga class.
But it is “in” taking care of ourselves that our enthusiasm for life and energetic stores are fortified, and guarding that hour will ultimately make us the best professionals, parents, and friends we can be.
You cannot give what you don't have. If you don't make space to take care of yourself, re-center, and re-charge, you will eventually have nothing left to give.
This spring, as you clear out your closets, clear off time everyday to take care of yourself. Ask, "where can I make more space for myself"?
It doesn’t have to be as concrete as an hour. It could simply be a ten-minute break away from your desk at work to walk around the block and let your mind relax.
It could be closing the door when you shower or bathe, lighting a candle, and taking six deep breaths as you feel the water nourish you, before going through your nightly routine.
It could be a few minutes of journaling to settle your thoughts, indulging in your favorite book or magazine before you sleep, just add a heat pack for extra comfort.
Create an atmosphere that makes this time special and different.
When you get home, put on your favorite tunes while you unpack your day and connect with your family, friends, or even your email!
Make it quality time with family. Put away the electronic devices and cook dinner together. Sit as a family, no distractions and simply chat about your day.
And finally, take time to cook your meals and turn the TV off while you eat. This will help you connect more with what you are eating, how you are eating, and therefore allowing the meal to nourish your mind and body on a deeper, more wholesome level.
All in all, as we start to move out of winter and into spring, when our hearts and minds start to move towards thoughts of warmer weather while the Earth is still wavering, take time for self-care.
Find your favorite self-care method, indulge, and just "be".
A little "you" goes a long way!
